Liam Griffin has drawn a parallel between a 32-team American Football NFL and the number of counties in Ireland and asked why a fairer GAA championship system can’t be devised.

Griffin made reference to the American Football structures, split between NFC and AFC conferences, to highlight the need for a radical reform of the calendar beyond what the GAA is currently doing.

As the Club Players Association, of which the former All-Ireland winning Wexford manager is an executive member, gave context to their plans, Griffin insisted a better way must be found.

“We had to stand back from the entire fixtures programme and say, let’s get to a blank canvas and look what can be done,” he said.
